Trading taught me the hard way. Data changed how I approached it.

I've been experimenting with sports trading for nearly a decade — football, horses, greyhounds, manual trading, automation, different strategies and more staking ideas than I'd probably like to admit.

Some worked for a while. Plenty didn't.

The biggest lesson wasn't discovering another strategy.

It was learning how difficult it is to know whether something actually works.

From Outcomes to Evidence

For years, I made many of the mistakes traders will recognise.

A bad run made me question a strategy. A profitable period increased my confidence. I'd change things, increase stakes, chase volume or move onto something else.

Eventually, data changed how I approached trading.

Instead of asking:

“Did I win?”

I became much more interested in:

“What does the evidence actually tell me?”

That change eventually led to Trade Carefully as it exists today.

The Journey Before Dog Pound

Trade Carefully existed long before the Dog Pound Strategy and it will grow beyond just one implementation.

The blog documents some of that earlier journey, particularly in the football markets — the ideas, mistakes, difficult periods and lessons around patience, data, strategy refinement and the psychology of trading.

Those articles matter because they show the thinking developing in real time, before there was a Research Framework or a product to sell.

Mindset Is Foundational

Trade Carefully isn't built on the idea that mindset means simply staying positive through losses.

It's about developing the discipline to work with uncertainty.

A profitable month doesn't prove a strategy works.

A losing week doesn't necessarily mean it has failed.

Historical variance doesn't place a boundary around future variance.

And sometimes the evidence really is telling you that you're wrong.

I've learned many of those lessons by getting them wrong first.

Today, I use small stakes, large research samples and automation where useful. I try to give ideas enough time to produce meaningful evidence rather than reacting to individual outcomes.

The objective isn't to maximise profit. It's to survive long enough to learn.

Why Trade Carefully?

Trade Carefully began as a sports-trading blog.

It has gradually evolved into a data-led sports-trading research project built around evidence, transparency, mindset and long-term thinking.

Our largest research project has now collected more than 49,000 UK greyhound market observations.

The broad hypothesis lost approximately 1,350 units.

Analysis and refinement of that research eventually produced Dog Pound — a narrower live implementation with a substantial positive historical result.

That contrast captures what Trade Carefully is really about.

The relationship between those two datasets is the research.

Automation Isn't the Answer

Automation has become an important part of how I research.

It helps me execute consistently, remove myself from individual decisions and collect data at scale.

But I've also lost money with automated strategies.

Putting a bad idea into a bot doesn't magically make it a good one.

Automation is an enabler. It isn't the solution.

The real value is the discipline underneath it: hypothesis, evidence, testing, patience, refinement and risk.

Those principles apply whether you trade manually or automatically.

The Trade Carefully Research Framework

Eventually, I wanted to document what this journey had actually taught me.

The result is the Trade Carefully Research Framework.

It brings together the research process, real datasets, mistakes, mindset and variance lessons, and the live Dog Pound implementation that emerged from the research.

It isn't a promise that I've solved sports trading.

I haven't.

It's a practical record of how I've learned to approach it differently.

Trade Carefully

I still don't know what the next 1,000 bets will bring.

That's rather the point.

Research means being comfortable enough with uncertainty to keep collecting evidence — and being willing to change when that evidence demands it.

Research first. Evidence before conviction. Trade carefully.
