Betfair Trading Mindset: I Used to Build Houses in My Head After One Good Week

There was a time when one good week of Betfair trading was enough for me to start spending money I hadn't made. Not literally, of course, but in my head I was already calculating what would happen if I doubled the stakes, compounded the profits and kept producing the same returns for the next month or year. Give me a particularly good run and I was practically building houses with future profits.

Looking back, it sounds ridiculous, but I suspect plenty of traders will recognise the behaviour. The problem wasn't ambition; it was that I was taking a very small amount of evidence and projecting it far into the future. A profitable week told me almost nothing about what the next 500 or 1,000 bets might look like. I didn't yet know the likely losing runs, the drawdown or whether what I was seeing was a genuine edge rather than a favourable patch of variance. None of that stopped me reaching for the calculator.

The dangerous part was what happened next. Once I'd mentally decided what a strategy could earn, I became emotionally invested in it being profitable. Stakes went up too quickly and losing runs became something to endure or escape rather than information to study. At other times I went in the opposite direction: a strategy started badly, I lost confidence, changed the rules or moved on to something else before I'd collected enough evidence to learn very much at all.

This is probably one of the biggest changes in my approach to Betfair trading today. I'm far less interested in asking “How much could this make?” and much more interested in asking “What does the evidence actually tell me?” It is a less exciting question, but it leads to better decisions about staking, bankroll and whether an idea deserves further testing.

It has also changed my relationship with losing experiments. If I've defined what I'm testing, kept the stakes small enough to survive the variance and collected useful data, an experiment doesn't necessarily have to make money to have value.

Sometimes discovering that an attractive idea doesn't survive contact with thousands of live bets is the result.

That mindset would have been difficult for me years ago because, if I'm completely frank, I wanted profits. I wanted the strategy to work. Now I would rather have evidence that challenges an idea than spend months protecting something simply because I want it to be true.

I still like houses. I just don't build them in my head after seven days of Betfair results anymore.
