The Dog Pound: October 2026 Results — A Recovery in a Difficult Year
October 2026 delivered a welcome recovery for The Dog Pound, Trade Carefully's automated greyhound betting research strategy. Across 51 recorded bets, the strategy produced five winners and 46 losers, generating a net profit of 17.70 units after 2% commission. That represents a return on turnover of 34.71%, following a particularly difficult September in which the strategy lost 50.14 units from 69 bets. October's improvement is encouraging, but it does not erase the challenges of 2026, which remains a loss-making year for The Dog Pound.
The wider historical record provides essential context. Since the research began in March 2025, The Dog Pound has recorded 2,270 bets, producing a cumulative net profit of 439.69 units and an overall return on turnover of 19.37%. However, that positive lifetime result conceals a substantial difference between the two calendar years. The 1,506 bets recorded during 2025 generated 532.33 units of profit, while the 764 bets recorded between January and October 2026 have produced a net loss of 92.64 units. The corresponding returns on turnover were +35.35% in 2025 and −12.13% in 2026.
The monthly distribution reinforces the importance of examining performance beyond headline profitability. Six of the first ten months of 2026 have been negative. April produced a loss of 68.99 units, June lost 30.27 units, and September lost 50.14 units. Positive results in May, July and October helped offset some of those losses, but they have not restored the strategy to profitability for the year. The contrast between September's −72.67% return and October's +34.71% return illustrates how dramatically results can fluctuate when selections are made at relatively high odds and winning bets are comparatively infrequent.
October's five winners produced a strike rate of 9.80%. That is consistent with the broader characteristics of The Dog Pound, where long sequences of losing selections can be interrupted by occasional higher-priced winners. During October, the longest losing sequence reached 14 consecutive bets, and the maximum drawdown within the month's recorded sample was approximately 16.24 units. Across the complete historical dataset, the longest recorded losing sequence stands at 79 consecutive bets, while maximum observed drawdown has reached approximately 155.59 units.
These figures are central to understanding the financial and psychological demands of operating this type of strategy.
The cumulative results also illustrate why historical profitability should not be confused with consistency. The Dog Pound remains profitable over its recorded lifetime, but a strategy that has generated 439.69 units overall while losing 92.64 units during the current year cannot reasonably be presented as a dependable source of regular income. The historical record contains extended periods of underperformance, substantial drawdowns and considerable uncertainty about whether the conditions associated with earlier profitability will persist.
October also presented an operational challenge. Towards the end of the month, the virtual private server running BF Bot Manager experienced severe resource pressure, with CPU and memory utilisation approaching full capacity. The software subsequently shut down unexpectedly. Following a software upgrade, removal of old closed markets and a restart, the automated operation resumed. The incident highlighted the infrastructure demands of running The Dog Pound alongside an expanding Research Lab covering additional sports markets.
Because Trade Carefully's analysis depends on actual recorded betting activity, data integrity was a particular concern following the interruption. We reviewed the available backup against the October records and found no evidence of missing Dog Pound betting history. Nevertheless, the month contained several dates without recorded selections, including a five-day gap between 5 and 9 October. The available data does not establish whether these periods reflected an absence of qualifying selections or interruptions in collection. We have therefore reported the 51 recorded bets without estimating or reconstructing additional results. This distinction is important: an internally consistent dataset does not necessarily prove that every potential market opportunity was captured.
The Dog Pound originated from a programme of live greyhound market research that began in 2025. Rather than developing a strategy solely from historical backtesting, Trade Carefully collected live betting observations, examined the results and investigated whether particular market conditions could support a repeatable approach. The current Research Framework documents that process, including the limitations of the evidence and the risks associated with translating observed patterns into automated betting decisions.
That methodology is now being extended through the Trade Carefully Research Lab, with additional collectors investigating football, tennis and horse racing markets. The purpose of these experiments is not to manufacture a succession of profitable betting systems, but to accumulate evidence, examine market behaviour and identify which hypotheses, if any, justify further testing. Some investigations may produce useful research-derived approaches. Others may demonstrate that apparently attractive ideas are unprofitable or operationally impractical. Both outcomes contribute to the research.
October's results provide a useful reminder of the difference between a positive reporting period and a demonstrated long-term advantage. The Dog Pound recovered 17.70 units after September's substantial loss, but its cumulative 2026 performance remains negative. Its lifetime profitability is a matter of historical record, not a guarantee of future performance. Whether the conditions that contributed to the stronger results of 2025 can reappear, or whether the weaker results of 2026 indicate a more persistent change, remains an open research question.
Trade Carefully will continue publishing the evidence, including losing periods, operational difficulties and findings that challenge earlier assumptions. The objective is not to make every month appear successful, but to build a credible record of how automated market research performs over time.
October 2026: 51 bets, five winners, 9.80% strike rate, +17.70 net units and +34.71% return on turnover.
2026 year to date: 764 bets, −92.64 net units and −12.13% return on turnover.
Since March 2025: 2,270 bets, +439.69 net units and +19.37% return on turnover.
All financial results are expressed in standardised one-unit stakes, with 2% commission deducted from winning profits. Figures are calculated from the published Dog Pound betting dataset. The analysis does not constitute independent verification against Betfair transaction records. Past performance does not guarantee future results, and automated betting carries a risk of substantial financial loss.
